A Historical Examination of Aboriginal Peoples in the City of North Bay and Surrounding Area

Description:

This project is an examination of the relationship between the Native communities and North Bay as well as Native relations on a national level. This project attempts to dispel stereotypes and bring to light the authentic experiences of both Aboriginals and North Bay inhabitants. Specifically, this project looks at the educational experiences of Aboriginals in the city of North Bay , the role of Natives in traditional city institutions, and the role of Native institutions in the city of North Bay .

"The Wonder Years:" Memories of Schooling in North Bay

Description:

North Bay offers a variety of schooling options: Catholic, public, and private elementary and secondary schools service the city as do post secondary institutions such as Canadore College and Nipissing University . Because education is so prevalent in this community, it is important to record and preserve the educational experiences of teachers and students. This project examines the experiences of both teachers and students, as well as the dynamics of the classroom and various social trends. An additional emphasis is placed on cross-generational themes as well as gender related issues.

Demarco's: More than Just a Store

Description:

This project is an examination of the impact that the oldest store in North Bay has on the community. This project looks at the social, economic, and cultural changes within both the store and the larger community. A detailed history of the DeMarco's is created as well as the impressions it has left upon the town as a whole. Interviews were conducted with both the proprietors of DeMarco's and the townspeople who regularly frequent the store.

Description:

This project sought to obtain information that is both accurate and thought provoking, in an attempt to dispel many frequently held myths within the common understanding of warfare. Interviews were conducted with WWII veterans who reside in the North Bay area. An emphasis is placed on examining the homefront, the recruitment and training processes, stories from the frontlines, and the eventual homecoming of the soldiers.

The purpose of this project was to compile an oral history of Nipissing University . An emphasis was placed on acquiring first hand accounts of people who had attended Nipissing. The goal of this project is to analyze the historical progress of the institution by interviewing a variety of people, including students, professors, founders, and community members.

The Emergence of St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Catholic Secondary School

This project takes a look at the conditions of St. Josephs and Schollard Hall before their merger in 1984-85. Both students and faculty are interviewed to determine what both schools looked like before the merger, how the staff and students reacted during the merger, and their opinions as to whether or not the merger was beneficial in the long run.

This project looks at the sawmill industry in North Bay and surrounding area, and examines how these industries effected the economy of those towns, as well as how the removal of such industries impacted these towns. It particularly takes notice of how political interests of various groups come into conflict and how the government is forced to choose between two sides to determine the future of single-industry towns.

This project examines the life of Angele Egwuna, the wife of the famous Canadian icon Grey Owl. This project looks at a variety of themes including inter-racial marriage in the early twentieth century as well as the cultural conflicts that emerge as a result. An additional emphasis is placed on Aboriginal culture in this time period and how such ideas can be seen in the writing of Grey Owl.

Description:

This project examines the impact of the arrival of CFB North Bay and NORAD on the town of North Bay . This study examines how the base shaped the economic and cultural atmosphere of the town, as well as how the townspeople felt about the base as a potential nuclear target during the Cold War. The project emphasizes on how the environment of fear was contained during these years, and how the base positively became an integral part of North Bay 's culture.

Early Mattawa Project

Description:

Heather Barkey has composed an extensive database of documents essential for the early history of Mattawa, a small town located 70km east of North Bay on highway 17. This database looks primarily at deeds directly dealing with Mattawa or Panieau townships.

The goal of this project was to build a database utilizing the General Documents of the Land Registry Office. This project focuses on Probated Wills and Letters of Administration. This database includes an Index page which lists the first 750 documents in the Land Registry Office's General Documents.

This database attempts to connect the schedule one and schedule two sections of the 1901 census for North Bay , Widdifield, and Ferris. This is done in order to allow a comparison of the different kinds of families present within North Bay at the time of the census.
